How to get your Photos in Google Earth?
January 12, 2007
Google Earth Version 4 is now available for download and is free. Google Earth is a pretty neat software! For those who like to travel, like architecture or are just curious about what your neighbors’ yard looks like, Google Earth will keep you busy for hours!!
If you end up really liking it, there is a version with improved features for just $20 – Google Earth Plus – and an even beefed up version for $400 – Google Earth Pro.
Now what I really like about this new release, is the rich content provided by the Discovery Networks, Wikipedia, UNEP, etc. Especially one feature that has to do with adding your own photographies into Google Earth!! Yeap, you heard me right… You can add your own photos.
Here is how to do it…
- Create an account at Panoramio.com – it’s free and you can upload up to 2Gb of photos (I am sure this will increase as they get popular)!
- Upload your photos…
- Map them on Google Maps from within Panoramio
- That’s it!
Once uploaded in your profile and mapped, your photos are linked to a specific location. When browsing this specific location, any Google Earth user will be able to see the Panoramio “dot” and by clicking on it, Shazaaam, the photo shows up loading the info about both the picture, location and the “Photograph by”.
Now, you won’t be able to see the photos you’ve just uploaded because the photos of Panoramio’s layer inside Google Earth are not updated in real time. They are updated each couple of weeks (approx), so you’ll have to wait to actually see the photos you’ve uploaded. BUT, Panoramio is kind enough to provide you with a RSS feed and a KML feed which are updated in real time…
The RSS feed will allow you to syndicate your content on your website, Blog, etc. (check the side bar on the right for an example) and the KML feed will allow you to share the locations where your pictures are mapped on until updated inside Google Earth.
How sweet is that huh??!!
Post your RSS feed link in comments and if you are amongst the first 10 to do so, we’ll add your link to our RSS aggregation tool
